Tridentifer - Zombified (Demo, 2013) Review

October 10th, 2013
Relf-released

At first, I confused the band's name as Zombified and thought it was the Swedish grindcore / deathmetallers, but the logo and the art did not remind me of anything so I thought that I misunderstood. Now, the band's name is Tridentifer and they are a newborn band from Germany, having no official releases apart from this debut demo. They operate with the pure, non-additive side of death metal, strictly inside it's borders and with hardly any surprise characteristic, which works both in their service and against them, depending on the listener's frenzy on the genre.

Four songs reside in this demo, which from the looks and only, gives a reliable idea of the band's objectives. Simple, mutilated corpse, probably traditionally drawn with classic fonts and green colour on the logo and blood, is very close to the cornerstone of every self-funded band's first steps. As one descends into the noise, everything goes by the plan. The production is rough and sharp, flirting with the sound of modern old school death metal bands like Entrails or Revolting, without necessarily copying the Swedish formula. Moving mostly around middle-paced patterns with a lot of groovy/blast-beating moments, their music is not hard to headbang to, despite the fact that it's not anything new to an experienced listener. Of course, releases like these are self-limited into the scene and only and this one will attract very few, if any people outside from death metal. Besides, I'm positive these guys do not really care about that and with hard work, they could accomplish a solid full album. It's not hard to make a listenable demo, pleasing to the fans for a short period of time, the true challenge lies in making it memorable and Zombified does not really do that.

The mastering and mixing are good for a first demo, achieving a clean and discernible sound that keeps it all standing. The riffing and drumming lines are rather regular, predicable and overall not that amazing as you would want, even though brutality is involved here, especially with the semi-shouting and growling vocals, very much influenced by the northern bands. I had a hard time trying to listen to the bass and I can't seem to come up with it's shining moment, thinking that it was kept in the dark on purpose, for a steady rhythm or something. The record starts with "Bloodwine", which contains a sample of sea waves and sound for about half a minute, then getting into flogging melodies that feature a legit solo towards the end, which again, has a sound of a shooting cannon. It's a short song that shows the narrow but well used pack of ideas they have, while the second song song "Zombified" does not change anything. The penultimate "Of Days To Come" is the longest track and the best on the demo, staring with a clean guitar intro and getting into a main part with interesting guitar lines. The fourth track "Ripping Cancer" is another concrete track, it opens an mechanic made intro and it has a staunch structure, based on it's familiar riffs.

Tridentifer do not bring anything new to the table with their debut demo Zombified, which would be really better if they had some faster and heavier parts, instead of the easy ones they had now. The several good moments were a bit ruined by the drums, as the slow blasts were fuzzing everything out. The band is still looking for it's sound and it has a way to maturity, but that doesn't hold them from creating an enjoyable, average release. It left me with an impression of indifference after it ended, still I believe that they can grow into something more complete if they stay focused.

Door to Door Promotion: Old Skin & Napalm Christ & Thula Borah

These releases were sent to me via email and they are posted by request.

----------

Old Skin - MÆRE [EP]

We are called Old Skin, based in Manchester, UK, and after just one show we were likened to Hessian, Oathbreaker and Amenra and played our second show at a sold out venue supporting Trash Talk.

Which means, this is a hardcore band for the hardcore peeps around here. MÆRE offers exactly what the fans want to listen, which is music easy to headbang and dance to. The new EP consists of five songs lasting about fifteen minutes. The first four songs are heavy and straightforward, whereas the last one is more down and low, merely an instrumental one.

Napalm Christ - Demo 2013

Napalm Christ hail from Arkansas, US and they are influenced by bands like Autopsy, Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, Brutal Truth etc... Don't hesitate to think of another clone band, they do have their own sound, and this is their demo for 2013. These three songs, along with an additional 4 songs, will soon be available on cassette via Goatprayer Records.

Thula Borah - Qualia [EP]

Bio:
Glasgow-based four-piece Thula Borah have just released their eagerly awaited new album 'Qualia'. The new album, a year after the release of highly acclaimed EP 'Live Secretly' which earned the band air play across a broad array of broadcasters, from BBC Radio 1, Channel 4’s Planet of Sound to an unlikely appearance on Radio 4’s Today Programme as well as encouraging reviews in the Daily Record and Blog sites all over the world.
The distinctive Thula Borah sound – which fuses post and alternative rock with ambient and acoustic textures - has been described variously as “a fiery cross between Mogwai and King Black Acid” (Dead Earnest) and “like pre-Screamadelica Primals, with a churning Ride undertow” (Channel 4). The band themselves shy away from any attempt to pigeon hole them, citing an eclectic array of influences, ranging from Low and Isis to the likes of Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins.

This is something totally different. A great mixture of post-rock and alternative rock, creating something relaxing, trippy and atmospheric. Thula Borah are listener-friendly and it seems that they had some great ideas to put in this release, making it a notable album for its style. Kudos to the band for having amazing vocals that don't ruin the euphoria. Recommended.

The Red Shore - Unconsecrated (2008)

Album: Unconsecrated
Genre: Deathcore / Technical Death Metal
Label: Nuclear Blast
Website: Facebook / Myspace

I think these guys are not active anymore, and thats a pity, they improved the level of the scene they were into very much. I enjoy all their three albums but this one a bit more, i think there is a chaotic compositional style that still makes sense, its listenable and often warm to my ears. They have some shredding parts similar to these the new tech death bands use and the sound is generally good.

Im rarely posting lately, im sorry about that, i have a university to fail at.

Thanatos - Angelic Encounters (2000) [Remastered 2007]

Album: Angelic Encounters
Genre: Death/Thrash Metal
Label: Hammerheart Records
Quality: CD-Rip 320kbps
Website: Facebook

Thanatos is one of the very first dutch death metal bands and they were jamming back in the middle eighties, when the average metalhead had pink hair and leopard pants. They did split up in 1992, but they were reformed and released some albums to meant to bring suffering, chaos and filth. One of their later albums is this one, which is nothing less than a punch to the gut of modern death metal.

The thrash element and the death element have been masterfully knitted to compose an anti-mainstream anthem album that Angelic Encounters is, these guys know how to write death metal songs and fill them up with solos and old school growls, so that the fans are pleased and the outsiders wanna throw up. Nothing's better than that. The remastered version was released in digipack and vinyl and it contains a cover of a Massacre song, with guest vocals from Joe Lewis of Vital Remains.

The Black Dahlia Murder - Nocturnal (2007)

The Black Dahlia Murder "Nocturnal"
2007, Metal Blade Records

Above is a band that has caused controversial opinions among the metalheads and the scene kids, since everyone seems to have the correct point of view about them or has been named the father of all music and knows best. I will not lie, there are some aspects of them that are easy targets for hating: The logo is deathcore-ish (need i say more?). They kinda belong to the deathcore scene as well even though they do not play that kind of music, its probably because of the shirt artworks they use and their sound is quite crystal clear and br00t4l.

My thoughts on all these? Its crap. As long as its good, i don't care if its named Barbie Pop or Trash Can Funk or whatever, if you get herpes whenever "core" is violating your ears' tranquility, go tell these guys. Or these guys. And i know what you're thinking "Hey we don't mean these bands, these other mainstream MotionlessInWhite and similar garbage". I totally agree and you have a hell of a point, but fuck you. Music changes and fans should change with it.

Anyway, back to Nocturnal, which is to me the best album by TBDM including Ritual, even though thats also one big punch in the throat of melodic death metal bands that repeat themselves every 15 seconds. Hammering, fast, melodic and heavy songs, well-worked high pitch vocals combined with growls, weedy musicians, a kickass album art and pentagrams is what the album is about. Songs like "Warborn", "Virally Yours", "Of Darkness Spawned" place the album just a step above everything else they've made. Again, maybe Ritual is about the same, i have to listen to it some times more for a sure answer.

When it comes to melodeath im really selective, im either old school death or very well structured modern death, most bands on the latter side cannot meet these expectations for me. This band though, has progressed dramatically since their debut and its safe to say that they are one of the best bands in the area of modern death metal, along with other ones that everyone hates. Their fanbase and the whole HxC scene these days makes me wanna vomit as well, its not the fans that make a band good or bad though. Thats how i see it.

The Breathing Process - Odyssey (Un)dead (2010)

Country: USA
Genre: Symphonic Black / Melodic Death Metal
Label: Candlelight Records
Website: Facebook

When it comes to the modern sound of melodic death metal, im very picky, since i dislike the boy looking bands, the clean vocals, the fanbase of the scene, weak riffs and everything that can go wrong on an album combined. However, this is much different, a wonderful blend of synths, keys, melodies and well worked growling vocals.

Plus, even the very carefully put cleans in the songs are not destroying anything now. Its an intense album even though it has interludes and "silent" parts, all the songs are fast paced and sound quite heavy. If there is anyone open to genre mixing, you might as well check this, if you have certain styles you like and would not change, do not waste your time.

Testament - The Formation Of Damnation (2008)

Country: USA
Genre: Thrash Metal
Label: Nuclear Blast
Quality: CD-Rip 320kbps
Website: Facebook / Myspace

Testament are a huge band that has released huge albums, from their early thrash era, to the death metal era, then again to their own music era that stays till today, they haven't released a bad album yet and all of them have something to offer, that to me makes them are pretty solid band, with an excellent carreer so far.

"The Formation Of Damnation" has blasting songs in it and it makes me move more than any other Testament album, i know they have a long history but with this one i started listening to them so all my favourite songs are in here. Their new album "Dark Roots Of The Earth" is a kick ass album as well, they have decided not to go downhill and we're happy to follow then.

Tribe Of Neptune - Γνῶσις (2010)

Country: Greece
Genre: Ambient / Depressive Black Metal
Label: Razorbleed Productions
Website: Facebook

Not many are familiar with this group, even here in Greece. I was really into DSBM and dark ambient once, so ive been looking all kinds of bands up, im glad i stumbled upon Tribe of Neptune during that period, this release -and the only by them- is a hidden gem of the scene.

Four really long tracks of atmospheric black metal with ambient parts is what it is, i think the fans will really dig it. It lacks at some aspects and in terms of song writing, but the overall conclusion is a solid 38 minute ceremony.

I liked the tracks even though i rarely listen to them whole, but its still a creative effort by them. I don't know their status, active or inactive. For the record, Γνῶσις is the greek word for knowledge, if anyone cares.
